Founder and co-chair, Michelson Philanthropies
Dr. Gary K. Michelson is the founder and co-chair, with his wife Alya, of Michelson Philanthropies, which includes the Michelson Medical Research Foundation, Michelson Found Animals Foundation, Michelson 20MM Foundation, and the Michelson Center for Public Policy.
He is a Board Certified Orthopedic Spinal Surgeon and a Diplomate of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. Disappointed with the low success rates and unreliability of spinal surgical procedures he witnessed as a young surgeon, he spent decades developing new implants, procedures, and the instruments required to carry out those procedures. These breakthroughs made spinal surgery less invasive and far more effective.
He is the most prolific individual inventor in the history of medicine and is the sole named inventor of nearly 1,000 patents throughout the world. He is a member of the National Academy of Inventors and was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2011.
Dr. Michelson is a vigorous advocate for philanthropic and public investment in biomedical research and convergence in scientific discovery. Together with Alya, he is donating $120 million to UCLA for the California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, which he chairs. He previously donated $50 million to the University of Southern California to establish the Michelson Center for Convergent Bioscience, and construct Michelson Hall, the largest academic building on the USC campus. Among other honors, he is a recipient of the Albert B. Sabin Humanitarian Award for innovations that enabled millions to live healthier, more productive lives, the Honor for Healthcare Research from the Paralyzed Veterans of America, and the Humanitarian Award from The Society for Brain Mapping and Therapeutics.
In 2016, the Michelsons signed The Giving Pledge, a campaign launched by Bill Gates and Warren Buffett that encourages the wealthiest individuals and families to contribute the majority of their fortune to philanthropic causes. They live in Los Angeles with their children and dog, Blue.

Philanthropy Through the
Next Generation’s Eyes
Jess Molasky (Moderator)
Jess Molasky is COO at Ovation Development, a company founded by his father, Alan, in 1984 and the region’s leading designer and developer of both market-rate and affordable multi-family housing projects in Southern Nevada.
The company has designed and built 33 multi-family communities throughout the Las Vegas metropolitan area valued in excess of $1 billion and encompassing 8,340 units. Today, Ovation is easily considered one of the state’s largest and leading developers of affordable housing with 13 projects totaling more than 1,900 units – with more under development.
After graduating from UCLA in 2016 where he studied geography, environmental science and urban planning, Jess worked for UCLA Capital Programs to build three new Leadership in Energy Environmental Design (LEED)-certified dorm facilities and two world-class LEED-certified athletic facilities to be used for upcoming Olympics in 2028. While working for the Capital Programs, Jess helped to roll out a pilot program which created transparency relative to power usage for students living in the dorms. By collecting sub-meter data and developing a dashboard, the energy consumption of each section and floor could be tracked.
In 2018, Jess returned to Las Vegas to join the family enterprise, focusing primarily on Ovation’s affordable senior product, which continues to set the bar high for the region’s standard in affordable housing with resident amenities and services that rival market-rate communities. Since joining Ovation, Jess has helped to develop three mid-rise apartment buildings, each Energy Star Certified and totaling almost 600 units. Jess’ efforts to bettering the community earned him Vegas Inc 40 under 40.
Born and raised in Las Vegas, Jess’ grandfather, Irwin, and chairman of The Molasky Group of Companies, developed many of the city’s transformational projects, including Sunrise Hospital, Boulevard Mall, Paradise Palms – the city’s first master-planned community, and many other iconic buildings and properties. Like his father, Alan, Jess is making his individual mark on the family legacy via an enhanced commitment to sustainable development and a continued commitment to help meet Southern Nevada’s critical shortage of affordable housing.
Chase Williams
Chase Williams is a senior at Bishop Gorman High School who has distinguished himself as a dedicated social impact leader. With nearly 100 hours of community service, Chase has made a significant impact through his work with various non-profit organizations, including Hope Means Nevada, the Salvation Army, and Catholic Charities.
Nick Vassiliadis
Nick Vassiliadis is a born and bred Las Vegan, with a Vegas fierce independence and a Nevada battle ready mentality. Nick’s a proud product of CCSD, graduating from Palo Verde High School, after winning a football State Championship. He was recruited by the University of San Diego, played for Jim Harbaugh and the team only lost 5 or 6 games during his time.
Competing and winning are his passions. After graduating from USD, he chose government affairs as a career, because there is a scoreboard…votes…so he can know if he’s won or lost. Working at R&R Partners as the Political Director, Nick has represented the Nevada Resort Association, the International Brotherhood of Carpenters, University Medical Center, Advantage Capital and a host of other clients. But, his hardest work and proudest achievements have come from his dedication to his community and state. Expanding funding for Meals on Wheels, Nevada’s first meaningful anti-bullying legislation, additional funding for Legal Aid, so children thrust into the system can have lawyers and hours of supporting our public schools. And, this is a very partial list of Pro Bono clients and causes that Nick has brought his skill and tenacity to. While, only in his late thirties, he’s an elite lobbyist and community activist. And, yes, he still keeps score.
